In order to capture the beauty of Sirmione, we will take a mini cruise tour of the peninsular, catching a glimpse of the Maria Callas’s villa and a far distant view of the archaeological site of Catullo’s Grottoes.
We will stop at Fonte Boiola to survey the bubbles from an underwater spring that flows from the bottom of the lake. And we will cruise pass the Medieval Castle and the bridge to enter the village.
A guided walking tour through the historical center of Sirmione, will follow, an ancient medieval village that is protected at the entrance with the elegant fortress, called Rocca Scaligera. Upon arrival, we will visit the Scaligeri Castle built by the Scaligeri family from Verona.
The castle was built mainly as a protection against enemies. Inside the castle, there’s a small museum holding a few finds of Roman artefacts. After visiting the castle, we will take a lunch break. However you may leisurely walk through the historical town to discover more ancient churches, where some are built in the 7th century.
In the afternoon, we will take a taxi boat to the main attraction of Sirmione, the Catullo’s Grottoes, which is the most outstanding Roman archaeological site in northern Italy. The villa dates back to the first century A.D and it was wrongly thought to be the summer resort of Catullo, who is a well-known poet from Verona.
The owner of this majestic building is still largely unknown. This magnificent villa is in the category of the “empire maritime villas”. We will learn more of the Roman aristocrats’ way of life through its original structure and functions of the rooms in the villa. However, the outlook over the lake from the villa is stunning and a must see beauty.
