The area of Trastevere offers a pleasant diversion from the tourist crowded historic center of Rome. The neighborhood is largely residential, characterized by narrow, cobble stone streets, with the structures from the Middle Ages and a large multiethnic student population from the university.
During this three hour exploration of Trastevere, you will find a fine selection of restaurants, bars and cafes that are frequented by locals. We will be walking and admiring the monuments and atmosphere of this authentic area of Rome.
Trastevere literally means beyond the Tiber, the river that runs through Rome and was originally connected to the main city by a small wooden bridge.
The immigrants, mainly Jews and Syrians, arrived from the East and settled in the area. The center of the public life of the neighborhood is Piazza di Santa Maria, where you will find the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the oldest and most visited churches in the city of Rome.
