Whether you're an experienced climber or simply an adventurous traveler looking for a unique experience, don’t miss the chance to discover the wonders of the most active volcano of Europe with this tour of Mount Etna from Taormina!
Join us on this Etna full-day trip from Taormina (or Giardini Naxos) and get ready to discover the seven lateral craters formed after the 1865 eruption, immerse yourself in the beauty of Mount Etna, and feast on a delicious lunch!
Your excursion will begin with a pick-up from Taormina or Giardini Naxos, followed by a drive in a comfortable climatized minivan up to the mountain's slopes. Once there you will first meet our passionate volcanological guide who will lead the tour, and you can start the hike to reach “La Bottoniera”, a complex of seven craters arranged one behind the other on the same axis, forming a row of buttons-like line that is located on the northeast slope of the volcano. These craters formed after the 1865 eruption, and have been slowly growing ever since, that’s why you can’t miss them. Each of the seven craters has its own unique shape and size, making them a fascinating spectacle for tourists to witness. During our tour, you will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with these natural wonders.
As we explore the craters, you will also have the chance to learn about the history of Mount Etna. Europe’s highest volcano has been active for over 500,000 years and has had a significant impact on the surrounding landscape. From the formation of the craters to the lava flows that have shaped the mountain, to the lava bombs that you meet along the path, there is so much to discover about this fascinating natural wonder. Our knowledgeable tour guide will be on hand to share their expertise and help you spot the various species that live in the area. You will have the chance to learn about the unique adaptations that allowed plants and animals to survive in this challenging environment, and discover how volcanic activity has shaped the ecosystem. A perfect example of adaptation is the Betula Aetnensis, a particular species of birch tree, which appeared in the territory after the last glaciation, dating back 10,000 years. The fertilizing action of the volcano's ash meant that the birch tree obtained ideal conditions to survive the particularly adverse climate at Etna's altitudes. The spectacle offered by the very rare ice-white trunk birch rising in the blackness of the lava rock is priceless, almost surreal!
What makes this tour special is the rewarding delicious lunch to refuel you for the rest of the journey. You will find a selected menu that showcases the best of Sicilian cuisine, with fresh, local ingredients that will tantalize your taste buds. Indulge in a range of traditional dishes, while taking in the stunning views of the mountain. Our lunch stop is perfectly timed to give you a chance to relax and recharge before continuing on with the tour. You will have plenty of time to savor your three course-meal, take in the views, and chat with your fellow travelers. Before heading back to Taormina/Giardini Naxos and finish this guided tour of Mount Etna, you will have 1 hour of free time to spend as you like, relaxing and enjoying the spectacular lunar-like landscapes that surround you, or taking the last stroll around the Etna’s trails.
