The Basilica of San Petronio is the main church in Bologna. It overlooks the wide Piazza Maggiore and, despite being largely unfinished, is the 6th largest church in Europe, after St. Peter's in the Vatican, the Milan Duomo, the Florence Cathedral, the St. Paul's in London, the Seville Cathedral. It is often regarded as a minor basilica, and its impressive size conquers the place of the 4th largest church in Italy.
Its construction was dedicated to San Petronio, patron of the city and its foundation dates back to June 7th, 1390. This is the last great work of the late Gothic Italian style, began shortly after the Milan Duomo.
Standing out among other famous medieval buildings adjacent to it, the Basilica of San Petronio gives the Piazza Maggiore in Bologna an incredible charm.
