Things to know about Bologna & Emilia

The city of Bologna, rich in delicious food traditions, renowned as an ancient university town, is also called with several ancient nickname in popular culture, such as the "fat", the “erudite" and the "red".
Home to prestigious cultural, economic and political institutions, today Bologna one of the most advanced exhibition centers in Europe. In 2000 it was acknowledged as "European Capital of Culture" and since 2006 has been declared the "City of Music" by UNESCO.

Bologna is also known for its arcades, which are present in almost all the streets and alleys of the center and that owe their origin to the strong growth that took place in the late Middle Ages. Famous for its two towers, Asinelli and Garisenda, symbols of the city, Bologna boasts several attractions in terms of architecture. In Piazza Maggiore, the main square, is the Gothic and imposing Basilica of San Petronio and its historic centre, famous for the characteristic red bricks, is the largest in Italy.

Homeland, native and adoptive, of many great Italian writers and poets, Bologna is also an ancient university town, which is now home to many students who love the Bolognese cultural and social life. In 1988 in Bologna was held the Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, considered the most important Mediterranean youth creativity event.

Not far from this city, you can visit other centers of great appeal, such as Maranello, Modena, Parma and San Marino, which offer lots of things to see and do.
The international fame of the Bolognese cuisine dates back to the Middle Ages, remarkably generous use of meat and pasta (hence the city’s nickname "the fat one"). Among the main traditional dishes you cannot miss are the tagliatelle (typical pasta), the cutlet, the tortellini and the famous ragù sauce.
