A complete tour of Sicily must certainly include Piazza Armerina, an ancient town with a medieval heritage, rich in Baroque and Norman architecture. This little town is famous for the splendid mosaics, kept in the Roman Villa del Casale, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1997.
 
Among the major historical monuments are the Cathedral of Piazza Armerina, the Church of St. Rocco and the ancient Garibaldi Theatre.
 
Another noteworthy attraction is the famous event of the Norman Palio, which is held every year for three days from the 12th to 14th August. It is the largest and most impressive medieval costume-reconstruction in Southern Italy.
