The Bridge of Sighs is one of the most famous bridges in Venice. Built in the early 17th century in Baroque style, this enclosed bridge serves as a connection between the New Prisons and the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace: originally, it was the passage-way through which the prisoners were conducted in prisons, and its name derives from its particular function.
Today, the Bridge of Sighs is admirable from the street in front of it, or from the canal that flows below it. It is also possible to access it from the Doge's Palace as part of a special guided tour.
Such is the reputation of the Bridge of Sighs that, in the world, its architectural structure has been replicated several times, in copies similar to the original Venetian one.
