The Palazzo Vecchio is the town hall of Florence. Its castle-like shape with a tall tower and crenellated walls is one of the most famous Florentine attractions.
Built at the beginning of the 14th century, Palazzo Vecchio stands where once was an ancient theatre of the Roman colony, dating back to the 1st century, whose ruins can be visited in the underground level.
The building was originally called the Palazzo del Popolo (or "Palace of the people" in English). Later on, in 1550, it was renamed Palazzo Vecchio, which literally means Old Palace. The harsh exterior architecture hides in its interior luxurious halls, beautifully adorned with frescoes, decorations and monumental sculptures.
