The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore ("Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower" in English,) is the main Cathedral of Florence. Also known simply as the Duomo of Florence, it was originally designed in 1296. The structure was built on the site of the 7th century the church of Santa Reparata, the remains of which can be visited in the crypt.
This imposing Cathedral had to be an icon of Florence's growing importance. The world-famous dome, which dominates the exterior and the whole historic centre, was added in the 15th century on a project of Filippo Brunelleschi, the most important architect of the early Renaissance.
The internal walls of the Dome were beautifully frescoed by Giorgio Vasari and other important artist of the time, while the 278 feet high Campanile (or Bell Tower) was design by Giotto di Bondone in 1334.
Being the icon of the city and one of the most renowned monuments in Italy, a tour to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is a prerequisite for any visitor in Florence!
