Piazza Navona is one of the most picturesque squares in the historic centre of Rome. It was established in the end of the 15th centuryupon request of pope Innocent X. 
 
During the 1st century this area was occupied by the Stadium of Domitian, mainly used for athletic events and chariot races, and in fact the square still preserves a characteristic oval stadium-shape.
 
Surrounded by enchanting Baroque buildings, Navona Square is a lively meeting place for both locals and tourists, with typical restaurants and open-air cafes. But the main attraction of the square is undoubtedly the trio of monumental fountains: the central one, the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini, is considered one of most magnificent in all of Rome.
