One of the best preserved and prominent Ancient Rome's monuments, the Pantheon dominates the Piazza della Rotonda, a picturesque square in the heart of Rome. It was built in 25BC by the general Marcus Agrippa as a temple for all pagan gods, but in 609AD it was converted into a Roman Catholic Church.
The exterior of the Pantheon makes an immediate impression on visitors, but the most extraordinary part of the monument is its interior: the forty-three meter high dome was one of the most innovative structures created at the time, with a wide central oculus, which lets into the building enough sun-light not to need artificial lighting.
Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still one of the largest domes in the world, and is undoubtedly a must-see for any tourist visiting Rome.
