Known as "Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti" in Italian, the Spanish Steps are amasterpiece of Roman Baroque style. It consists in a magnificent stairway with 138 steps, structured in a harmonious mix of ramps, curves and terraces.
Built between 1723 and 1726 by a design of the architect Francesco de Sanctis, the Spanish Steps lead to the Trinità dei Monti, while at the base of the Staircase is the Piazza di Spagna with its "Barcaccia", a Baroque fountain shaped as a sinking boat.
Since Renaissance time, Spanish Steps has been a popular place for artists, painters and poets who were inspired by its beauty and elegance: a unique place to enjoy the atmosphere of the Eternal City, with breathtaking views of the historic centre.
